DESCRIPTION:If the crowd around us says the sky is green\, it’s much easier to go along with the crowd than to be the lone standout arguing for blueness.\n\n\nHow can people who seem perfectly sane believe seemingly crazy things? Why will people shapeshift their individual morals to align with collective immoralities?\n\nAlan E. Godwin\, Psy.D. is a Licensed Psychologist in private practice in Nashville with over 35 years of experience. He counsels with individual adults and with couples. Dr. Godwin also serves on the adjunct faculty of the Graduate Counseling Department of Trevecca University where he teaches a class for doctoral students called Psychodynamic Psychotherapies. For ten years\, he developed and presented seven seminars nationally for mental health professionals through Cross Country Education\, Vyne Education and PESI Education. He is the author of two books: How to Solve Your People Problems (2008) and the recently released\, Ties That Blind: Unraveling Stories That Keep Us in the Dark.\n\nLearning Objectives: \nParticipants will learn \n\nto describe the parallels between individual and collective deception.\nto explain how people can become un-deceived\, whether that happens individually or collectively.\nto show how understanding collective blinding is enhanced by our understanding of individual blinding because the elements are essentially the same.\n\nLunch will be provided. \n\n\n \nIn Ties That Blind\, psychologist Alan Godwin attempts to answer such questions by looking at the nature of collective deception. There’s a difference between what’s true and a story that’s false but sounds true. The propagation of a false story begins by telling people what they want to hear and then appealing to their coalitional instincts-the natural human desires to congregate with like-minded others. Their attachment needs pull them into a story where truth becomes less valued than the warm embrace of crowd inclusion. Barricaded inside what Dr. Godwin calls a “story-based fortress\,” they come to accept a distorted reality which they now call “truth” and label all fortress outsiders as liars or fools.
